Brainteasers!
Anyone have some brainteasers to post? I have lots, and lots, and lots.
Iris's Brainteasers
1. What is the probability that the difference between two randomly chosen single-digit numbers is greater than 5?
2. One of the following letter combinations does not belong. Which one is it?
Eu, Sm, Pr, Ho, Hg, Yb, Ce
3. What words/phrases are depicted below?
4. Suppose you are on a boat in the middle of a lake. On the boat, you have a very heavy lead anchor. If you were to drop the anchor into the lake, would the water level rise, fall, or stay the same? Why?
5. A contest is fixed. Everyone knows it, including the contestants. One of the contestants, however, makes it to the final playoff level.
The master of ceremonies presents the following challenge: "This box contains two slips of paper. One slip has the word 'winner' printed on it, the other has the word 'loser.' Your task is to select the winning slip - without looking of course."
The contestant knows that this challenge is fixed. He realizes that both slips have the word 'loser.' How can he select one slip and win the challenge? By the way, the contestant can't declare this contest is a fraud or he'd lose his current winnings.
Amy's Brainteaser's
1. What occurs once in every minute, twice in every moment, yet never in a thousand years?
2. If it were two hours later, it would be half as long until midnight as it would be if it were an hour later. What time is it now?
3. Imagine there are 3 coins on the table. Gold, silver and copper. If you say a truthful sentence, you will get one coin. If you say a false sentence, you get nothing. Which sentence can guarantee gaining the gold coin?
4. Three goddesses were sitting in an old Indian temple. Their names were Truth (always true), Lie (always lying) and Wisdom (sometimes lying). There was the following conversation:
Asking the left one: "Who is sitting next to you?"
"Truth," she answered.
Asking the middle one: "Who are you?"
"Wisdom."
And at last question for the right one: "Who is your neighbor?"
"Lie," she replied.
Now it is clear who is who.
5. A man finds a coin that says 46 BC. Do you believe him?
6. On any coin of the United States of America, there are two four-word phrases. One is "In God we trust". What is the other?
I'll post the solution when someone gets them.
Iris's Brainteasers
1. What is the probability that the difference between two randomly chosen single-digit numbers is greater than 5?
- Spoiler:
- You are making two independent choices from 10 possible digits, which gives you 100 possible combinations. Since one of the two numbers must be greater than 5, that gives you four possibilities to work with: 9, 8, 7, and 6. From 9, you can subtract any of four numbers to leave a difference greater than 5: 0, 1, 2, or 3. From 8, you can subtract three numbers; from 7, you can subtract two; and from 6, you can subtract one. That makes 10 possibilities, and since the numbers can be in any order, you have 20 possible combinations out of 100 total, for a probability of 1 in 5.
2. One of the following letter combinations does not belong. Which one is it?
Eu, Sm, Pr, Ho, Hg, Yb, Ce
- Spoiler:
- Hg does not belong. On the periodic table, it is the symbol for mercury (element 80), which is a metalloid. All the other symbols are for lanthanoids (elements 57 through 70).
3. What words/phrases are depicted below?
- Spoiler:
- Initially when the lead anchor is on the boat, the mass of water that is displaced upward is equal to the mass of the lead anchor. This is a lot of water since the lead anchor is heavy. When the lead anchor is dropped into the water, the volume of water displaced upward is equal to the volume of the lead anchor. The lead anchor is denser than water, so the amount of water equal to the mass of the lead anchor is greater than the amount of water equal to the volume of the lead anchor. Thus, when the lead anchor is dropped into the lake, there is less water that is being pushed upward, and hence the water level of the lake falls.
- Spoiler:
- Answer: The contestant picks one of the slips. The slip is placed out of view (possibly eaten). The contestant then asks the MC to read the slip that was not selected. That MC's slip has the word "loser." When the audience hears "loser," they logically conclude that the contestant must have picked the winning slip.

2. If it were two hours later, it would be half as long until midnight as it would be if it were an hour later. What time is it now?
- Spoiler:
- 9 p.m.
3. Imagine there are 3 coins on the table. Gold, silver and copper. If you say a truthful sentence, you will get one coin. If you say a false sentence, you get nothing. Which sentence can guarantee gaining the gold coin?

5. A man finds a coin that says 46 BC. Do you believe him?
- Spoiler:
- Trick question. There can very well be a coin from 46 BC, but it wouldn't say BC because the time era wasn't called BC at that time.
6. On any coin of the United States of America, there are two four-word phrases. One is "In God we trust". What is the other?
I'll post the solution when someone gets them.

Re: Brainteasers!
I don't get any of them, because I'm not smart like you. xD
Though I do know the second one.
*spoiler*
EDIT: OH DUH. The first one says SINGLE digit. I thought it said of all numbers. xDD
I don't know the answer but...
Though I do know the second one.
*spoiler*
- Spoiler:
- The answer is Hg, since it's not a part of the lathanide series on the periodic table
EDIT: OH DUH. The first one says SINGLE digit. I thought it said of all numbers. xDD
I don't know the answer but...
- Spoiler:
- A small chance? There are only a few combos that are greater than five. From 1-5, the numbers cannot be greater. From 6-9 it could.
I guess 1/3?

I'll wait till someone gets the 3rd one 'fore posting the solution.
EDIT: I felt like adding more.

Re: Brainteasers!
One?
The other one I'm stuck on. :l
- Spoiler:
- Neither. Just because it is very heavy and made of lead, it may not be very big in mass and also the way it's shaped.
The other one I'm stuck on. :l

Re: Brainteasers!
Oh wow. Confusing.
I have a brainteaser, but let me find it. xD It's a simple one.
You should edit the first post with all the brainteasers. And answers if their answered.

A few simple ones.
OH YES LOGIC PROBLEMS.

Re: Brainteasers!
Yep. :]
The fourth one is actually really simple. I got it without looking at the answers.
